the smell of garbage is
the smell of all things at once
every imagined happiness
discarded for every new one
ripening thick summer air
a dense essay of a scent
on the tyranny of limitless possibility
Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Time Management for Mortals, have definitely made me think a lot about the relationship between possibilities, freedom, and fulfillment and happiness.
Downtown Toronto has lots of iconic garbage smell areas. Animal Collective has that song “Summertime Clothes” with the line “smell that trash”. There’s something just weirdly repulsive yet somehow also intriguing about the smell of garbage. Mostly it’s disgusting, yet so complex, and at times it feels like my body is confused enough that the thought of salivating comes to mind.
